Portrayal of Women on Daily Soaps

The Indian audience has finally heaved a sigh of relief. Now you must be wondering what has brought about this sudden change in the behaviour of people. It is the changing trend of serials on television that has made the audience sit up and notice the difference. Used to the typical Saas-Bahu serials, these new concepts of daily soaps has emerged like a breath of fresh air. Serials from the likes of " Na Aana Is Des Lado","Jyoti" and "Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo" has greatly impressed the audience and they have finally accepted that the role of a girl or woman in a family is the most important of all. These serials portray the role that a girl or a woman has in a family. I would be covering these various serials and throwing light on the basic theme of these serials and how the women are portrayed here.

Jyoti

'Jyoti' is a show which salutes all enduring woman. The story traces the journey of a young woman Jyoti, the eldest of the three sisters and a brother and the sole bread winner of the family who sacrifices her dreams and aspirations to fulfill every need and desire of her family.

The TRP of this serial has been on the rise ever since it was aired on NDTV Imagine in January.
This serial is basically the story of a girl named Jyoti Sharma who is the eldest daughter in a family of a father, mother, grandmother and three younger siblings. She is the sole breadwinner of her family as her father has been paralysed after an accident and her siblings are too young to earn. She does two jobs simultaneously and supports her whole family on her own. Her journey starts from her lover and her youngest sister betraying her to finding out the truth about her mother actually being her real mother's sister and her two youngest siblings not being her real siblings to Jyoti getting married to a blind rich man who loves her, just to escape from the atrocities of her youngest sister and her mother. After marriage, Jyoti has to tolerate the taunts of her rich relatives because she herself has come from a lower middle class family. The positive aspect is that in the end it is Jyoti who comes out as the winner as the good always wins.

Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo

Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo is a television serial based on the story of a young girl who is fighting with poverty to support her family in a male dominated society and fighting the atrocities of the high class landlords.

'Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo' is about a poor girl named Lali who lives in a small village panchgani in Maharashtra with her mother, father, 2 sisters and brother. She goes through many trials to survive life without much money and to support her family in times of poverty. Meanwhile an evil man named Bali goes around her village offering money in return for beautiful girls, he is desperate to get Lali and he finally does. Lali is sold off to rich Thakur by her Mother and Lali enters a new household where she has been bought for a purpose, to give an heir to this family. It is basically the journey of Lali's life from her parents' house to the house of her husband and in-laws and all the hardships she has to face throughout. She shows the courage of a true woman who knows how to handle all her problems and how to maintain relations.

Na Aana Is Des Ladoo

This show has a very strong concept based on the issue of female infanticide. The story revolves around a small village where the birth of a girl child is a sin.

In this serial all the new born girls are sacrificed in the name of God. When the girl child is being sacrificed, then the male member of the family asks God to give the child a rebirth as a male child. The serial shows the journey of the women in the backward areas of India like the small villages and the mentality of the men there. The crux of the story comes when all the women stand together as one and rebel against the system of the village. It throws light on the fact that if a woman has resolved to do something she does not rest until she has achieved her goal.
